Hispano of the Month: Timo Nunez

At 22, flamenco dancer Timo Nuñez has the whole world at his feet. On top of performing for international audiences, the Santa Barbara-local recently choreographed a PBS special and starred in the motion picture, “Rent.” What’s next for the hot act?

Isabelle Gullö investigates.

When did you start dancing?
“I was one of those kids who knew exactly what he liked to do and did it. I danced like crazy from the day I could walk and started my dance training at age seven.”

What is it about flamenco that you love?
“I’m still constantly learning new things. It’s a very proudexpression of art and a lot of work must be put into the understanding of every single movement and verse.”

Do you remember the first time you preformed?
“It was at a café in San Diego. I was 11, and thought I was going to die. I was brought in to the act as a specialty and danced with Juan Talavera’s professional company.”

Does it make you uncomfortable when women come up and gush over you (as I expect they do all the time)?
“It doesn’t happen all the time, first of all. But when it does, of course I enjoy it, who wouldn’t? I mean, I appreciate it. More importantly, I feel satisfied when I see that I’ve moved somebody.”

What are your biggest achievements?
“Learning how to handle my career by turning off the creative side of my brain and focusing on the organization and business. Besides that, I was in my first movie, ‘Rent,’ where I learned to dance the Tango and had my first experience on a major motion picture set. I also choreographed the PBS Special ‘Benise, Nights of Fire.’”

How involved are you in the local dance scene?
“I perform locally quite often, and also teach classes and private lessons in town. Unfortunately, Santa Barbara restaurants haven’t really caught on to the idea that this is a town of Spanish and Mexican descent. Hopefully that will change soon.”

What about the future?
“I want to be an actor in film and on stage. I’ve been seriously studying acting for about six years and am ready to put it to use. Actually, I just got my first acting part and am totally excited about it.”

Where can people find you during Fiesta?
“Hopefully at the opening of Fiesta at the Old Mission. Aside from that, I have been hired for the closing ceremonies at the Court House Sunken Gardens on Fiesta Sunday.”

What’s the best advice someone ever gave you?
“Mi abuela, Wita, told me to ‘Think ahead,’ and ‘don’t do dumb things.’”

Do you follow her advice?
“I stay out of trouble. As far as intelligence goes...well, I do my best.”

A sus 22 años, el bailarín de flamenco Timo Nuñez, tiene a todo el mundo a sus pies. Además de presentaciones para audiencias internacionales, este residente de Santa Barbara recientemente coreografió un especial para la PBS, una cadena de TV pública y obtuvo un papel en la película “Rent”. ¿Que hay de nuevo para este candente joven?

Isabelle Gullö investiga.

¿Cuándo empezaste a bailar?
“Yo fui uno de esos niños quien supo siempre exactamente lo que me gustaba hacer y así lo hice. Bailé desde que empecé a caminar y comencé mi entrenamiento a los siete años”.

¿Qué es del flamenco que tú amas?
“Continúo aún hoy aprendiendo nuevas cosas. Es una expresión de arte de mucho orgullo y conlleva mucho trabajo el aprender cada movimiento o verso”.

¿Recuerdas tu primera presentación?
“Fue en un café en San Diego. Yo tenía 11 años, y pensé que me iba a morir. Yo fui invitado al acto y baile con Juan Talavera y su compañía de baile profesional”.

¿Te incomoda cuando tantas mujeres se te acercan y se mueren
por ti (como creo que sucede con gran frecuencia)?
“No me sucede siempre. Pero cuando pasa, por supuesto lo disfruto mucho, ¿quien no? Lo aprecio mucho. Lo que es más importante es que me siento muy satisfecho cuando sé que he conmovido a alguien”.

¿Cuáles son tus mayores logros?
“He aprendido a manejar mi carrera al ‘apagar’ la parte creativa de mi cerebro y concentrarme en la organización y el negocio. Además, ya actué en mi primera película, ‘Rent’, donde aprendí a bailar el tango y tuve mi primera experiencia en un ‘set’ de película. También coreografié el especial de la PBS ‘Benise, Noches de Fuego’”.

¿Cuan envuelto te encuentras en la escena local del baile?
"Yo hago presentaciones locales con mucha frecuencia, enseño clases y doy lecciones de baile privadas. Desafortunadamente, los restaurantes de Santa Barbara aún no caen en cuenta de que este es un pueblo de descendencia española y mexicana. Tengo la esperanza de que esto cambie pronto”.

¿Qué hay para el futuro?
“Quiero ser actor de cine y de teatro. Estoy estudiando actuación desde hace seis años y ya me siento listo para empezar. Recientemente, me han ofrecido mi primera oportunidad de actuar y estoy muy ansioso y motivado”.

¿En donde podremos encontrarte durante Fiesta?
“Espero que en la apertura de Fiesta, en La Misión aparte de eso, me han contratado para las ceremonias del cierre en los jardines de la corte (Court House Sunken Gardens) el domingo final de Fiesta”.

¿Cuál fue el mejor consejo que alguien te haya dado?
“Mi abuela,Wita, me dijo ‘Siempre piensa hacia el futuro y no hagas tonterías’”.

¿Y tu sigues este consejo?
“Me mantengo alejado de problemas o perturbaciones. En lo que conlleva el ser inteligente….bueno, siempre me esfuerzo en hacer lo mejor”.
