Q. When did you begin to dance?

A. I started to dance at the age of 8 when my mother forced me to take dance lessons. I was very shy as a little girl and the thought of dancing in front of an audience really intimidated me. My mother did not give me a choice, however, and I started my schooling at Linda Vega Studios and have been there ever since. I had a deal with my mother that I would not dance in Fiesta, but in 1977, when the time came I could not resist the temptation, and I danced in Fiesta. I quickly fell in love with the seduction of the audience and the stage. I also dance hip-hop, Mexican Folkloric, but Flamenco is my favorite.

Q. What does Flamenco mean to you?

A. Flamenco is one of my biggest passions. It is an art full of life that requires a lot of emotion. It is something you have to feel in your heart in order to express it on the dance floor. Flamenco is not only a dance, but a lifestyle. Once you ignite the Flamenco flame within you, you carry its emotion in your everyday life.

Q. Who is your music idol?

A. I have eclectic taste when it comes to music, so no one pops in my head right away. However, my favorites are: Michael Jackson, Celia Cruz, Ray Charles, The Beatles, José Merce, Camarón De The Island, Carmen Linares, Alicia Keys and Mana.

Q. How did you react when you were chosen as Spirit of Fiesta 2007?

A. When La Presidenta, Kelly Magne, announced my name I remained in shock for the next 20 minutes. I remember my eldest sister Adriana rush the front to congratulate me. I remember feeling the honor of in representing Linda Vega Studios in their 20th anniversary. Now I am looking forward to living al the experiences that come with being the Spirit of Fiesta.

Q. What piece of advice can you give to girls who start to dance Flamenco?

A. Have fun. I help teach Flamenco at Linda Vega’s, and rule number one is to have fun. I always tell the students that a Flamenco dancer has to contaminate the audience with excitement, and that cannot happen unless one as a dancer in genuinely having a good time dancing.

Q. We know you are not only a great dancer but a great student as well. Tell us a little of where Alina is heading?

A. My parents always emphasized the importance of education. It is because of them that I am who I am. In the fall I will begin my college education at the University of California in Davis. I am majoring in Communication and International Relations. I don’t know exactly what career I want to pursue, but I know I want to work helping the community. I also like the idea of working with children.
Ultimately I want to do something that makes my parents proud.

P. Cuando comenzaste a bailar y porque?

R. Yo empecé a bailar a los 8 años cuando mi mama me forzó a empezar clases de baile. Cuando era niña era muy tímida, y aunque el baile fue un aspecto que si me interesaba, la idea de bailar frente de un publico me espantaba. Así que mi mama no me dio una alternativa, y comencé a tomar clases de baile con el estudio de Linda Vega. Al principio mi mama y yo estuvimos de acuerdo que no tendría que bailar yo durante las fiestas Españolas de Agosto, pero cuando llego la hora, no pude resistirme y me enamore de la audiencia del escenario.

P. Que significa el flamenco para ti?

R. Para mi el flamenco es una de mis grandes pasiones. Es un arte lleno de vida que evoca cada emoción imaginable en una manera distinta y apasionada. Es un sentido que se siente de muy dentro del alma. Lo que me atrae mas del flamenco es que no solo es una forma de baile, sino también un estilo de vivir. La música del flamenco es una maravilla para mi. Una de las cosas que mas me encanta, es que el flamenco siempre esta evolucionando sea por estilo, música, o estilo de vestuario. Siempre esta cambiando, y siembre ay mas que aprender.

P. Que sentiste al saber que eres ganadora?

R. Cuando anuncio mi nombre La Presidenta Kelly Magne, me sorprendí un poco, no porque no creía en mis habilidades, pero porque el oír mi nombre fue extraño y maravilloso al mismo tiempo. Era un momento extremamente feliz para mi. Aunque el titulo de Espíritu De Fiesta siempre fue algo que yo anhelaba, el ser nombrada el Espíritu fue un sentimiento que me cacho por sorpresa y es una experiencia que nunca voy a olvidar.

P. Que consejo les das a niñas que empiezan a bailar flamenco?

R. Que se diviertan. El flamenco para mi es sobretodo un amor durante cual mi divierto. Yo soy una de las maestras para el Estudio de Linda Vega, y es un placer ver que las niñas chicas se pasen tan bien el tiempo durante nuestras clases de practica. Con las niñas mas chicas de cinco y seis años, es mas importante que se divierten y que cuando bailen, demuestren el placer que sienten. Es un gran placer para mi ver que la pasión que yo siento para el flamenco también hace feliz a las niñas chiquitas.

P. A parte de saber que eres una gran bailadora también sabemos que eres buena estudiante. Háblanos un poco de ti quien es Alina y donde te ves en el futuro?

R. Me han creado a ser muy sensitiva a la política, a la injusticia, a casos humanitarios, a la educación y a mucho mas. Es por el apoyo de ellos que e prosperado no solo en mi educación y en el baile, pero también como persona y ser humano. En el otoño empezare la nueva fase de mi educación en la Universidad de California en Davis que esta a diez minutos de la ciudad de Sacramento. Me estoy especializando en los programas de comunicación y Relaciones Internacionales, pero como me interesan muchas cosas, es muy probable que eso cambie. No se exactamente lo que me gustaría hacer como profesión después de la Universidad, pero se que quiero trabajar en algo que ayude a la comunidad y a la gente. Siento necesidad de ayudar a los que necesiten ayuda, y aunque no quiero ser maestra de escuela, si me atrae la idea de trabajar con niños.
