It’s that time of year again. The days are slipping into long nights, there’s a certain chill and crispness to the air, and soon the fat man in red garb will be sliding down our chimneys (don’t close that flue!). That’s right—it’s holiday time. The madness of mall shopping, the hustle and bustle of throngs of shoppers down State Street, the decorations… they all remind us that Christmas is right around the corner. Traditional Christmas colors are red and green, and you’ll be seeing a lot of them soon. For this issue, however, we here at Tinta Latina decided to focus on one of those colors in particular: green.

Here’s why:
Santa Barbara has, for a long time, been in the forefront of earth-conscious living. The original Earth Day owes its origins to Santa Barbara, and it has made such a strong impact that the distinction of an environmentally conscious community has never really left the city. Well, we here at Tinta Latina decided that it was time for us to see just where Santa Barbara businesses stand in what we’re calling the “green movement.” Check out our spread of green businesses on
page 10.

And as the year comes to a close, I would like to remind everyone that it is important we focus on what we are grateful for, what is most important to us—our family. Samantha Siegel has done a great job outlining how our two cultures, Latino and Anglo, both celebrate the holidays (page 37). We also feature top local restaurants Savoy, Spiritland Bistro, and Joe’s Café to highlight some holiday food and recipes from both cultures (page 38).

Otra vez estamos en esa época del año. Las largas noches están acortando los días, hay algo fresco y vigorizante en el aire, y en poco tiempo el hombre gordo vestido de rojo va a deslizarse por nuestras chimeneas. Así es—es temporada de fiestas. La locura de los centros de compras, el ajetreo de la multitud de compradores en State Street, las decoraciones… todo esto nos hace recordar que falta poco para la navidad. Los colores tradicionales de la navidad son el rojo y el verde, y pronto verá mucho estos colores. Para esta edición, sin embargo, nosotros aquí en Tinta Latina decidimos concentrarnos en uno de estos colores en especial: el verde.

Lo digo porque:
Santa Barbara, por mucho tiempo, ha estado en la vanguardia en cuanto a vivir una vida con conciencia de la tierra. El Día de la Tierra (Earth Day) debe sus orígenes a Santa Barbara, y ha tenido un impacto tan fuerte que esta ciudad realmente nunca ha dejado de tener la distinción de ser una comunidad consciente del medioambiente. Bueno, nosotros aquí en Tinta Latina decidimos que era tiempo para que nosotros viéramos exactamente donde estaban los negocios de Santa Barbara en relación a lo que nosotros estamos llamando el “movimiento ecológico.” Lea nuestro despliegue sobre los negocios ecológicos en la página (10).

Al llegar al fin de año, me gustaría recordarles a todos que es importante que nos enfoquemos en las cosas por las que estamos agradecidos, lo que más nos importa—nuestra familia.
