Since high school, her nickname has been Tiger.
It makes sense. Tigh Guerrero has an impressive
roar.
Even as a kid, the Murrieta, Calif., native
grabbed the spotlight as an aspiring singer,
dancer and actress. At 5, she began tap and
ballet classes. By 7, she was wowing a school
talent show with her rendition of Whitney
Houston’s “Greatest Love of All.”
Today, 20-year-old Tigh is poised to sign
a record contract. She has attracted the interest
of several labels, including Interscope, DreamWorks
and Atlantic.
Tigh knew early that she wanted to perform.
“I decided it was going to be what I
would do for the rest of my life,” she
said.
She’s doing it. Backed by a 14-piece
band, the singer-songwriter’s music is
Janet Jackson meets J.Lo. Tigh describes her
sound as a hybrid of hip-hop, Latin, pop and
rock.
Her first break came in 1999 when she met
producer Billy Griffin and auditioned as a
backup singer for his group Club Onjnu. But
he recognized potential and made her lead
singer. The group recorded an album in late
1999 and toured the country.
She then gained the attention of musical director
Rex Salas, who has worked with stars like
Janet Jackson and TLC.
“At first it was intimidating,”
she said. “I didn’t have that kind
of experience under my belt. But we became
really good friends and he just made everything
very comfortable.”
He helped her record a three-song demo, which
led to Tigh’s performance at the 2001
Radio Music Awards.
Tigh has also worked with Michael Jackson
guitarist David Williams and producer Bobby
Jones, whose other clients included Madonna
and Jennifer Lopez. She pursued acting, but
didn’t appreciate efforts to Anglicize
her name to the non-Hispanic “Ashley
Miles.”
An only child of Puerto Rican and Argentine
heritage, her real name is Ashley Tigh Guerrero.
Her idols include Celia Cruz, Gloria Estefan,
Madonna, Sarah McLachlan and Sheryl Crow.
She loves the rush of performing.
“It’s the energy that the audience
throws back at you,” she said. “You’re
giving them a certain energy and showing them
your heart and soul by performing. It becomes
addicting.”
An excellent student, she considered medical
school and was accepted at a pre-med prep
school in her teens. But she can’t imagine
trading her microphone for a stethoscope.
Her dream is “to be able to share my
music and share what I have in my heart and
my soul,” she said. “Just to be
able to reach little girls that are dreaming
of things I dreamed of and to tell them it’s
possible.”
Tigh will perform a showcase at 2:30 p.m.

una impresionante voz.
esde niña, la californiana originaria
de Murrieta, ha sido el centro de atención
como una potencial cantante, bailarina y
actriz.
A los cinco años empezó con
clases de tap y ballet, a los siete fue
ovacionada por su talentosa representación
de la canción “Greatest Love
of All” de Whitney Houston en un espectáculo
escolar.
Actualmente, a los veinte años, Tigh
está lista para firmar un contrato
de grabación, ha atraído el
interés de diferentes firmas, entre
las que se encuentran Interscope, DreamWorks
y Atlantic.
Tigh supo desde joven que lo que quería
hacer era ser cantante. “Decidí
que eso sería mi profesión
por el resto de mi vida”, dijo. Lo
está logrando. Acompañada
por una banda de catorce músicos
y con letra y música de la canta-autora
Janet Jackson, se asemeja a J. Lo. Tigh
describe su música como un híbrido
de Hip Hop, Rock latino y Pop.
Su primer paso fue en 1999 cuando conoció
al productor Billy Griffin, con quien audicionó
para formar parte de su coro en el grupo
Club Onjnu. Él reconoció su
potencial y la convirtió en cantante
principal. El grupo grabó un disco
a finales de 1999 y realizó una gira
nacional.
En ese entonces Tigh llamó la atención
del director musical Rex Salas, quien ha
trabajado con artistas como Janet Jackson
y TLC. “Al principio fue intimidante”,
dijo, “Yo no tenía esa clase
de experiencia, pero nos hicimos buenos
amigos y él hizo todo muy fácil”.
Rex Salas la ayudó a grabar un demo
de tres sencillos, con el que Tigh ganó
el premio 2001 Radio Music.
Tigh ha trabajado también con David
Williams, guitarrista de Michael Jackson,
y con el productor Bobby Jones, quien también
trabaja con Madonna y Jennifer López.
También intentó entrar en
el mundo de la actuación, pero no
le gustó la americanización
de su nombre a Ashley Miles ya que su verdadero
nombre es Ashley Tigh Guerrero. Es hija
única y lleva consigo una herencia
puertorriqueña y argentina.
Entre sus ídolos desatacan Celia
Cruz, Gloria Estefan, Madonna, Sarah McLachlan
y Sheryl Crow.
Siempre le ha gustado el acelerado ritmo
del espectáculo. “Es la energía
que te llega del público”, dijo,
“tu les estás dando energía
y abriéndoles tu corazón y
alma cuando cantas. Es adictivo”.
Como una excelente estudiante, consideró
atender a la escuela de medicina y fue aceptada
a la misma durante su adolescencia, pero
no pudo imaginar cambiar el micrófono
por un estetoscopio”.
Su sueño es “ser capaz de compartir
su música, su corazón y su
alma”, dijo, “sólo llegar
a las niñas que sueñan lo
que ella soñó y decirles que
es posible”.
Tigh se presentará el 17 de octubre
a las 2:30pm en S.I.R. Studios en Hollywood.
