Kenya
As a little girl in Mexico City, Kenya grew
up in a family of performers and artists.
Her father is a magician; her mother is
a photographer. From them, Kenya inherited
a love of entertainment and the arts.
At 7 years old, she was singing with Grupo
Colibri and won first place in the festival
Juguemos a Cantar. “Since I was little,
I have loved music,” she said in a
phone interview.
Today, the 26-year-old is the co-host of
FuZion, an entertainment program on the
Spanish-language network mun2 television.
Kenya, who joined the show last year, commands
attention with her stylish outfits (which
she picks out herself) and her witty, from-the-hip
banter with co-host Alfonso.
“I love it,” she said. “It’s
fresh, It’s natural, You can speak
your mind without having to contend with
a script.”
Aimed at young adults, FuZion features news
on entertainment, music, movies and fashion.
Kenya began her career as a singer in Grupo
Colibri and Agualuna. She also has acted
in theater and television, including “Somos,”
“Tres Generaciones” and “Papa
Soltero.” She has hosted other TV programs
such as Padrisimo and Gems Jamz.
A Mexican producer dreamed up the name Kenya,
which she initially disliked. Now she prefers
to use only that name professionally.
“A producer gave that name to me,”
she said. “In the beginning, I didn’t
like it because there was an elephant in
the circus named Kenya.”
Already an accomplished singer and actress,
Kenya is currently taking mambo and salsa
dance lessons and may just become a “triple
threat.”
“I’ve always loved to be an entertainer,”
she said.
Kenya is based in Miami. In her spare time,
she enjoys roller-blading, jogging, dancing,
decorating and working out. She is also
active in People for the Ethical Treatment
of Animals. In fact, her father’s profession
sparked her love of four-legged creatures.
“My dad is the Mexican magician Chen
Kai,” she said. “He always tended
to have a lot of animals, lions and tigers
around and I always interacted with them.”
“When I was little, my sisters and
I would get in fights to see who would help
out Dad,” she said.
Her favorite performers are Jennifer Lopez,
Britney Spears, Ricky Martin and Enrique
Iglesias. Kenya enjoys seeing that Hispanic
performers are receiving more attention
than ever.
“I love the fact that they’re
taking notice of Latin artists, especially
women,” she said.
FuZion airs at 7 p.m. Monday through Friday
on mun2 television.

Kenya
Kenya creció en una familia de artistas
en la ciudad de México. Su padre
es mago y su madre fotógrafa. De
ellos, Kenya heredó un amor por el
mundo de las artes y el entretenimiento.
Su padre es el mago mexicano Chen Kai. Ella
y sus hermanas compitieron por papeles pequeños
en su espectáculo. “Cuando era
pequeña, mis hermanas y yo nos peleábamos
por ver quién ayudaría a Papá,”
dijo.
Kenya empezó su carrera como cantante
a los siete años con el Grupo Colibrí,
con quien ganó el primer premio en
el festival “Juguemos a Cantar”
y posteriormente formó parte del
grupo Agualuna. También ha actuado
en teatro y televisión, incluyendo
los programas “Somos”, “Tres
Genera-ciones” y “Papa Soltero.”
Ha presentado otros programas de televisión
como “Padrísimo” y “Gems
Jamz”. “Desde que era pequeña,
me ha encantado la música,”
dijo en una entrevista por teléfono.
Actualmente, a los 26 años, Kenya
es la co-presentadora de FuZión,
un programa de diversión en la red
de habla española mun2 televisión.
Kenya, quien entró en el programa
el año pasado, llama la atención
con sus conjuntos de moda (que ella misma
escoge) y con su aguda y franca charla con
su co-presentador Alfonso. “Me encanta,”
dijo, “Es muy fresco, muy natural,
puedes hablar desde el alma sin apegarte
a un guión.”
El programa destaca noticias del mundo del
entretenimiento, la música, el cine
y la moda y está dirigido a un público
de jóvenes adultos.
Un realizador mexicano inventó el
nombre Kenya, que a ella en un principio
no le gustaba pero ahora, profesionalmente,
prefiere usar sólo ese nombre. “Un
realizador me dio ese nombre,” dijo.
“Al principio no me gustó porque
había un elefante en el circo llamado
Kenya.”
Ya como reconocida cantante, Kenya actualmente
toma lecciones de mambo y salsa, y podría
convertirse en una “triple amenaza”.
“Siempre me ha encantado ser artista,”
dijo.
Kenya vive en Miami. En su tiempo libre,
disfruta patinar, caminar, bailar, decorar
y hacer ejercicio. También es miembro
activo de Gente para el Tratamiento Ético
de los Animales (People for the Ethical
Treatment of Animals), de hecho, la profesión
de su padre inició su amor por los
animales. “Mi padre es mago,”
dijo, “solía tener muchos animales,
leones y tigres alrededor. Siempre tuve
mucha interacción con ellos.”
Sus artistas favoritos son Jennifer López,
Britney Spears, Ricky Martin y Enrique Iglesias.
Kenya disfruta ver que artistas hispanos
reciben más atención que nunca.
“Me encanta que hoy en día se
toma más en cuenta a los artistas
latinos, especialmente a las mujeres,”
dijo.
