Real Women Have Curves
Mexican-American
teenager Ana (America Ferrera) dreams of attending
college, leaving her East L.A. home and becoming
a writer. She’s torn, however, between
those modern ambitions and love for her traditional
family, who would prefer that she get married
and have children.
Her father sympathizes, yet doesn’t want
to let his daughter go. Her mother Carmen
(Lupe Ontiveros), who dreams of becoming a
grandmother, wants Ana to choose a more conventional
path.
Ana reluctantly takes a job in her older sister
Estela’s garment factory. There, she
discovers empowerment in an unlikely place.
When Ana helps to finish an order of evening
gowns, she realizes how different her life
is from the women who will eventually wear
those dresses – and how most women could
never even fit into the gowns.
Ana inspires the factory’s female workers,
encouraging them to embrace their own womanly
curves. Her experience in the factory gives
her the courage to follow her dreams.
A moving tale of a young woman’s quest
for her identity amid social and family pressures,
“Real Women Have Curves” won the
Dramatic Audience Award at the 2002 Sundance
Film Festival, where Ferrera and Ontiveros
received a Special Jury Prize for Acting.
The movie’s script also won this year’s
Humanitas Award. It is the first theatrical
release for HBO Films and Newmarket Films.
The film is based on writer Josefina Lopez’s
own experiences.

Frida
“Frida”
is the story of the Mexican painters Frida
Kahlo (Salma Hayek) and Diego Rivera (Alfred
Molina).
Frida and Diego have become immortal personalities
because of their turbulent love stories,
their unforgettable but controversial trips
to the United States and their strong characters.
They have also been a legend for their unconventional
style of living and their links with personalities
like Leon Trostky (Geofrey Rush), David
Siqueiros (Antonio Banderas), Tina Modotti
(Ashley Judd) and Nelson Rockefeller (Edward
Norton).
“Frida” tells the incredible and
incomparable story of the Latin American
artist and symbol Frida Kahlo through the
fresh and lively way of July Taymor. Taymor
also directed “Titus”, the Broadway
production “The Lion King” and
“The Green Bird”.
Frida’s premier, by Miramax Films,
was celebrated on October 25th in New York
and Los Angeles.
The cities of Chicago, Philadelphia, San
Francisco, Boston, Dallas, Washington DC,
Detroit, Atlanta, Houston, Seattle, Cleveland,
Denver, Sacramento, St. Louis, Portland,
San Diego and Albuquerque will have the
premier on November 1.
Finally, the premier in Tampa, Minneapolis,
Miami, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Orlando, Baltimore,
Indianapolis, Hartford, Raleigh, Kansas
City, Cincinnati, Milwaukee, San Antonio,
New Orleans, W. Palm Beach, Las Vegas, Richmond,
Austin, Honolulu and Tucson will take place
on November 8.

Las
Mujeres de Verdad tienen Curvas
Ana (América Ferrera), una adolescente
México-Americana, sueña con
dejar atrás su hogar en el este de
Los Ángeles para ir a la universidad
y convertirse en escritora, sin embargo
mantiene una lucha entre estas modernas
ambiciones y el amor por su tradicional
familia, quien desea que ella se case y
tenga hijos.
A pesar del apoyo de su padre, éste
tampoco la quiere dejar ir. Su madre Carmen
(Lupe Ontiveros), sueña con ser abuela
y espera que Ana elija una vida más
apegada a las tradiciones.
A regañadientes Ana comienza a trabajar
en la fábrica de ropa en donde su
hermana Estela (Ingrid Oliu) trabaja, ahí
descubre un poder inesperado. Cuando ayuda
a terminar un pedido de vestidos de noche
se da cuenta de lo diferente que su vida
es de aquella de la de las mujeres que eventualmente
usarán esos vestidos y de cómo
estos mismos vestidos no le quedan a la
mayoría de las mujeres.
Ana inspira a las trabajadoras de la fábrica
haciéndoles ver la belleza de sus
cuerpos y curvas. Esta reconfortante experiencia
en la fábrica le da valor para perseguir
sus propios sueños.
Relatando una historia sobre una joven mujer
en búsqueda de su propia identidad
entre las presiones sociales y familiares,
“Las Mujeres de Verdad tienen Curvas”
ganó el premio del género
dramático en el Festival Sundance
de 2002.
Asimismo Ferrera y Ontiveros recibieron
un premio especial por su excelente actuación.
El guión de la película ganó
este año el premio Humanitas, además
esta será el primer estreno de tipo
dramático de HBO Films y Newmarket
Films. La película está basada
en las propias experiencias de la escritora
Josefina López.
