Raising Victor Vargas
A touching
and funny coming-of-age story, “Raising
Victor Vargas” follows a group of teenagers
as they awkwardly explore their budding
sexuality.
Set on New
York City’s Lower East Side, it stars
Victor Rasuk as Victor, a teenage Casanova
who brags about his skill with girls. He
soon softens his cocky ways and shows signs
of maturity when he falls in love with Judy,
a pretty and popular girl from the neighborhood.
Victor lives with his grandmother (Altragracia
Guzman), his younger brother Nino (Silvestre
Rasuk) and his younger sister Vicki (Krystal
Rodriguez). Guzman is excellent as the frustrated
grandmother who tries desperately to keep
her grandchildren on the right path. She
puts a lock on the telephone, makes them
attend Mass and even threatens to throw
out Victor, whom she deems a bad influence
on his siblings.
As the movie begins, Victor is mortified
when friends discover his fling with a heavyset
neighbor nicknamed “Fat Donna.”
He immediately hunts for a new girlfriend.
He and his best friend, Harold (Kevin Rivera),
meet two prospects at the neighborhood pool.
At first, Judy (Judy Marte) and Melonie
(Melonie Diaz) rebuff the boys; the girls
even make a pact to avoid guys altogether.
But attractions spark and before long, Harold
and Melonie are secretly involved. Meanwhile,
Judy is wary of Victor. A cynical girl who
has been wooed by countless creeps, she
slowly begins to thaw in a series of tender
scenes with Victor around the neighborhood.
Directed by Peter Sollett, “Raising
Victor Vargas” features several newcomers
and first-time actors, who were discovered
when producers held open auditions and posted
fliers on the Lower East Side. “Raising
Victor Vargas” opens in theaters in
April.

Educando a Víctor Vargas
Una sensible
y divertida historia juvenil, “Educando
a Víctor Vargas” sigue a un
grupo de adolescentes mientras éstos
exploran torpemente su sexualidad en desarrollo.
Ubicada en
el bajo este de la ciudad de Nueva York,
presenta a Víctor Rasuk como Víctor,
un adolescente casanova que presume sus
habilidades con las chicas. Pronto, él
suaviza su arrogancia y muestra signos de
madurez cuando se enamora de Judy, una linda
y popular chica del barrio.
Víctor vive con su abuela (Altagracia
Guzmán), su hermano menor Nino (Silvestre
Rasuk), y su hermana menor Vicki (Cristal
Rodríguez). Guzmán representa
un excelente papel como la frustrada abuela
que trata desesperadamente de mantener a
sus nietos en el camino correcto, por lo
que pone un candado al teléfono,
los hace ir a Misa y hasta amenaza con correr
de la casa a Víctor, a quien considera
una amenaza para sus hermanos.
Conforme la película avanza, Víctor
se mortifica cuando sus amigos descubren
su aventura con una corpulenta vecina de
nombre “Fat Donna”. Él
inmediatamente sale en busca de una nueva
novia. Él y su mejor amigo Harold
(Kevin Rivera) conocen a dos nuevos prospectos
en la alberca del barrio. Al principio,
Judy (Judy Marte) y Melonie (Melonie Diaz)
los rechazan, inclusive hacen un pacto para
evitar a los chicos por completo. Sin embargo
la atracción sale a relucir y pronto
Harold y Melonie entablan una relación.
Al mismo tiempo, Judy va con cautela respecto
a Víctor. Siendo una chica incrédula
que ha sido pretendida por innumerables
chicos raros, Judy lentamente empieza a
ceder tras una serie de tiernas escenas
con Víctor alrededor del barrio.
Dirigida por Peter Sollet, “Educando
a Víctor Vargas” presenta a
varios actores novatos y recién iniciados,
quienes han sido descubiertos cuando los
productores realizan audiciones abiertas
y publican folletos en la parte baja del
este de Nueva York. “Educando a Víctor
Vargas” estará en cartelera
en abril.
