An Interview with Linda Mendoza
Linda Mendoza
directed “Chasing Papi,” a comedy
about three Latinas dating the same man.
This is her first feature film, which she
hopes will break barriers for Hispanics
in mainstream comedies. Of Mexican-American
heritage, Mendoza has worked in television
and on concert events for 20 years. Her
credits include “The Bernie Mac Show,”
“The Brothers Garcia,” “The
Chris Rock Show,” “Latino Laugh
Festival” and “Jerry Seinfeld:
Stand Up Confidential.”
Chasing Papi,”
starring Jaci Velasquez, Roselyn Sanchez,
Sofia Vergara and Eduardo Verastegui, opened
on April 16.
How does it feel to have your first feature
film under your belt?
It feels like
such a major accomplishment and relief all
in one. It was a big undertaking, but it
was such an amazing experience with a great
cast and crew. The cast is impressive. You
have newcomers, plus people like Maria Conchita
Alonso and Sheila E. I really felt like
it was important to not only showcase the
new talent but the talent that’s been
there, like Sheila, Maria and Paul Rodriguez…It’s
an homage to all of us, really. I worked
really hard to keep the cast diverse and
show as many different colors of all of
our flags as possible.
Did you go to school
for this?
Actually, I
was going to school to be a sociologist.
I was going to Wayne State University in
Detroit. I really wanted to be a sociologist
because I’ve always been fascinated
by people and their environments. I’ve
always been a people-watcher. I’d go
to parties and I’d be in a corner just
watching how people interact. I think a
lot of that comes from being a very shy,
insecure person growing up in Detroit, where
here I am a little brown girl in what is
really a black and white world. I don’t
mean that negatively, but that’s what
Detroit was. I didn’t fit in anywhere.
(At 20, Mendoza moved to California. She
got a job as a page in a television studio,
which sparked her career in television.)
What are your favorite
movies and directors?
I have always loved old movies. I love Frank
Capra. I love “It’s a Wonderful
Life” and “It Happened One Night.”
I love all the 60s comedies, “What’s
Up Doc.” Peter Bogdanovich was fantastic.
My favorite directors are Robert Altman
and Francis Ford Coppola.
Did those old screwball comedies influence
“Chasing Papi?”
Absolutely.
There is an homage in there to almost all
the great directors. I wanted to make an
old-fashioned, Hollywood feel-good movie.
I didn’t want it to be specific to
the Latin culture. I wanted it to be specific
to the screwball comedy genre. I think people
still have these ideas of what Latin films
are. And I wanted to blow that out of the
water, just make a movie that was funny
first and Latin second.
What are those ideas
about Latin films that you wanted to blow
out of the water?
The fact that
it’s not all struggle and seeking an
identity. I wanted to make a mainstream
American comedy with Latin stars, and I
think we were able to accomplish that. And
if it can cross over, great. I really feel
a lot of people will relate to the movie.
It wouldn’t matter if it was three
Asian women, three African-American women
or three Anglo women.
When people see the movie, what we get a
lot is, ‘it’s refreshing,’
‘it’s unexpected.’ And that’s
great. I want to turn the stereotype on
its ear.
The Matrix Reloaded
Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne
Moss and Hugo Weaving reprise their starring
roles in “The Matrix Reloaded,”
the much-anticipated sequel to “The
Matrix.”
Like its predecessor, “Reloaded”
features stunning visual effects, brilliantly
choreographed martial arts sequences and
an ominous, futuristic storyline. In the
first movie, Neo (Reeves) learned machines
have enslaved human beings in a computer-generated
reality called the Matrix, where people
appear to live, work and play as usual.
But the machines are actually using human
beings as energy sources, as little more
than batteries trapped in pods. The Matrix
makes people think they’re living normal
lives. After meeting a group of rebels who
have awakened from the Matrix and are fighting
against the machines, Neo learned he is
“The One,” a prophetic and powerful
man who can help save the human race.
In “Reloaded,” the machines have
discovered the location of Zion, the last
human city, and plan to destroy it in 72
hours. Neo and the rebels must stop them.
Directed by Andy and Larry Wachowski, “The
Matrix Reloaded” also stars Jada Pinkett
Smith, Monica Bellucci, Harold Perrineau
Jr., Harry Lennix and Nona Gaye. “The
Matrix Reloaded” opens in theaters
on May 15. The third movie in the “Matrix”
trilogy, “The Matrix Revolutions,”
will be released later this year.

Linda
Mendoza dirigió “Chasing Papi”,
una comedia sobre tres latinas que salen con
el mismo hombre. Ésta es su primera
película, con la que espera romper
las barreras a las que se enfrentan los hispanos
en la comedia. Con una herencia México-americana,
Mendoza ha trabajado en televisión
y en presentaciones de conciertos durante
20 años. Su currículum incluye

¿Qué se
siente tener la primera película bajo
el brazo?
Se siente como
el mayor cumplido y alivio al mismo tiempo.
Fue un gran proyecto, pero fue también
una gran experiencia con un gran elenco y
equipo de trabajo. El elenco es impresionante.
Tienes nuevos talentos y gente como María
Conchita Alonso y Sheila E. Realmente siento
que fue importante no sólo mostrar
los nuevos talentos sino también talentos
que han estado ahí, como Sheila, María
Conchita, como Rodríguez... Es un homenaje
para todos nosotros, de verdad. Trabajé
muy duro para mantener un reparto diverso
y para mostrar tantos diferentes colores de
nuestras banderas como fuera posible.
¿Fuiste a la escuela para esto?
De hecho, iba
a ir a la escuela para estudiar sociólogía.
Iba a ir a Wayne State University en Detroit.
Realmente quería ser socióloga
porque siempre he estado fascinada con la
gente y sus entornos. Siempre quise ser observadora
de gente. Iba a fiestas y me quedaba en una
esquina sólo para ver como interactuaba
la gente. Creo que mucho de eso se debe a
haber sido tímida y una persona insegura
creciendo en Detroit, en donde era una pequeña
niña café en un mundo que es
blanco y negro. No lo digo de manera negativa,
pero eso es lo que Detroit era. Yo no encajaba
en ningún lado. (A los 20 años
Mendoza se mudó a California. Obtuvo
un trabajo como mensajero en un estudio de
televisión, lo que impulsó su
carrera en TV.)
¿Cuáles
son tus películas y directores favoritos?
Siempre me han
gustado las películas viejas. Me encanta
Frank Capa. Me encanta “It’s a Beautiful
Life” y “It Happened One Night”.
Adoro todas las comedias de los sesentas,
“What´s Up Doc”. Peter Bogdanovich
fue fantástico. Mis directores favoritos
son Robert Altman y Francis Ford Coppola.
¿Estas locas comedias
tuvieron alguna influencia en “Chasing
Papi”?”
Absolutamente.
Hay un homenaje a casi todos los grandes directores.
Quise hacerlo a la antigüita, que fuera
una película de Hollywood de buena
sensación. No quise que estuviera enfocada
a la cultura latina, quería que se
enfocara al género cómico. Creo
que la gente aun tiene aquellas ideas sobre
las películas latinas y quería
borrarlas, quería hacer una película
que primero fuera divertida y luego latina.
¿Cuáles
son esas ideas sobre las películas
latinas que querías borrar?
El hecho de que
no todo es lucha y búsqueda de identidad.
Quería hacer una comedia Americana
con estrellas latinas, y creo que lo logramos.
Y si puede llegar más allá,
genial. Realmente siento que mucha gente se
identificará con la película.
No importa que sean tres mujeres asiáticas,
o Afro americanas o inglesas. Cuando la gente
ve la película, lo que escuchamos mucho
es que es “refrescante”, “inesperada”,
y eso es grandioso. Quiero cambiar el estereotipo.
