The Jewels of the Pacific
Northwest
Imagine miles
and miles of lush, emerald-green forests
surrounded by sapphire, blue water and soaring,
often snow-clad mountaintops. This place
is home to more than 100 pairs of bald eagles
and close to a hundred enormous killer whales
(Orcas) that cruise by along the shore.
It’s not uncommon to find deer grazing
in someone’s backyard, and most everyone
you meet will greet you with a genuine smile.
Welcome
to the San Juan Islands of Washington, one
of the most popular vacation spots in the
Pacific Northwest. While many people think
of this area as cold, rainy and gray, the
San Juans actually lie within a so-called
Blue Hole, a rain- shadow vortex. Compared
to Seattle, sixty miles south, which get
40 inches of rain every year, the San Juans
get as many as 250 days of sunshine annually.
June through September can bring temperatures
in the mid-seventies.
Out of the 170 islands that make up this
archipelago, only four are accessible by
ferry. To visit any of the other islands,
you’ll need a boat.
San Juan Island is the biggest and most
populous of these four and also the most
geographically diverse with thick, green
forests, vast farmlands and dry, desolate
pastures. The two large parks, American
Camp and British Camp, are popular among
hikers and bikers as well as wildlife enthusiasts,
and there are plenty of scenic spots along
the coast. Friday Harbor is the main town,
with an abundance of art galleries, gift
shops, and cozy restaurants.
Shaw Island is the least developed of the
four. No lodging or restaurants exist here,
and the island is run by nuns. If you go
on a daytrip from another island, bring
your own food and water, and don’t
miss the last ferry of the day. Rural Lopez
Island is the favorite among bicyclists.
Its largest park, Spencer Spit State Park,
is perfect for beach walks, camping, and
bird watching.
Beautifully pristine Orcas Island is a paradise
for anyone seeking relaxation and outdoor
adventure. Many of the islanders are adept
at massage and other types of healing arts,
and you’ll also find a plethora of
locally made arts and crafts (be sure to
visit Orcas Island Pottery). The island’s
centerpiece, Mount Constitution, is the
highest point of the San Juans and its many
lush trails are great for hiking, with spectacular
waterfalls to cool off in along the way.

Los dos grandes parques, American Camp y
British Camp, son populares entre excursionistas
y ciclistas y entre entusiastas de la vida
salvaje, además de que hay numerosos
lugares escénicos a lo largo de la
costa. El Puerto Friday es la ciudad principal,
con abundantes galerías de arte,
tiendas de regalos y acogedores restaurantes.
La isla Shaw es la menos desarrollada de
las cuatro. No cuenta con hoteles ni restaurantes.
La isla es manejada por monjas. Si va en
una visita de un día, es necesario
que lleve su comida y agua y que se asegure
de no perder el último ferry del
día. La isla Rural López es
la favorita entre los ciclistas. El parque
más grande, Spencer Spit State Park,
es perfecto para caminatas en la playa,
campamento y observación de aves.
La preciosa y rupestre isla Orcas es un
paraíso para aquellos que buscan
descansar y al mismo tiempo gustan de las
aventuras al aire libre. Muchos de los isleños
son expertos masajistas y en diferentes
artes curativas, usted encontrará
también abundantes artesanías
locales (asegúrese de visitar la
Alfarería de la Isla Orcas).
La pieza central de la isla, el Monte Constitución,
es el punto más alto de las Islas
San Juan y sus exuberantes caminos son maravillosos
para los excursionistas, con espectaculares
cascadas para refrescarse durante el recorrido.
