Intolerable Cruelty
What
happens when a glib LA divorce lawyer squares
off against a gorgeous gold-digger, and the
wacky Coen Brothers are the ones writing the
script? Intolerable Cruelty (Universal/Imagine
Entertainment), opening this month, provides
all the answers.
Don’t be turned off by the dull title;
the Coens’ movies are anything but boring.
This romantic comedy doesn’t star Richard
Gere and Julia Roberts, but it does feature
the first-time pairing of red-hot George Clooney
and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Clooney plays Miles
Massey, a suave lawyer that foils Marilyn
Rexroth’s (Zeta-Jones) scheme to take
her rich husband to the cleaners. Although
the bust is no big loss to Rexroth, who has
made a career out of divorcing sugar daddies,
she refuses to be out-sharked by a lawyer,
no matter how handsome he may be. But will
she be able to exact revenge on someone so
irresistible?
Intolerable Cruelty comes complete with all
the trademarks of the Coens’ films, from
plot twists and turns to a cast of quirky
supporting characters (played by such notables
as Billy Bob Thornton, Geoffrey Rush and Cedric
The Entetainer). Chances are Clooney’s
charm and Zeta-Jones’s zest will make
this movie very, very tolerable.
Intolerable Cruelty opens in theatres October
10.
Mystic River
“We bury our sins, we wash them clean,”
whispers the tagline to Clint Eastwood’s
latest film, Mystic River (Warner Bros). Based
on the chilling novel by Dennis Lehane, Mystic
River is a crime drama that follows the lives
of Jimmy (Sean Penn), Sean (Kevin Bacon),
and Dave (Tim Robbins). The trio dirty their
feet together as kids in a blue-collar neighborhood
of Boston, but are wrenched apart by a dark
tragedy that befalls one of them. They spend
the next twenty-five years living apart from
each other, always connected by the haunting
secret that lurks in the backs of their minds.
The sudden and mysterious murder of Jimmy’s
daughter throws the three back together again.
Sean, now a weary homicide detective, finds
himself assigned to the case, along with his
trusty partner, Whitey (Laurence Fishburne).
Sean and Whitey try to decipher the crime
while contending with the loose-cannon antics
of an enraged Jimmy. The immediate story of
the murder unfolds over the backdrop of the
larger tale, the close friendship of three
men who lost their innocence too soon.
Clint Eastwood directed, coproduced, and even
wrote the score. Audiences at the Cannes Film
Festival in France received the film warmly,
giving an optimistic outlook for its U.S.
release. If the climax of the movie does justice
to the suspenseful build-up, Eastwood may
have his biggest hit since the Oscar-winning
Unforgiven.
Mystic River opens in certain cities on October
8. It opens in theatres nationwide on October
15.

sucede cuando un abogado civil se enfrenta
a la denuncia de divorcio contra una hermosa

la historia? Intolerable Cruelty (de Universal
e Imagine Entertainment) que se estrena este
mes, le dará todas las respuestas.
No se desanime por la simpleza del título,
la película de los Coen es cualquier
cosa menos aburrida. Esta comedia romántica
no es estelarizada por Richard Gere y Julia
Roberts, pero presenta a la candente pareja
de los candentes George Clooney y Catherine
Zeta-Jones. Clooney juega el papel de Miles
Massey, un abogado que echa abajo el plan
de Marilyn Rexroth (Zeta-Jones) para sacar
provecho de su millonario marido. A pesar
de que el monto no será gran pérdida
para Rexroth, quien ha hecho carrera tras
divorcios de ricos millonarios, se niega a
ser la víctima de un abogado, sin importar
cuan bien parecido éste sea. Pero,
¿será capaz de cobrar venganza
de alguien tan irresistible?
Intolerable Cruelty es una obra completa,
con todas las características de las
pelùiculas de los Coen, desde giros
en la historia hasta un reparto de complementarios
personajes (representados por notables actores
como Billy Bob Thornton, Geoffrey Rush y Cedric
The Entetainer). Las posibilidades son que
el encanto de Clooney y el vigor de Zeta-Jones
hagan de esta película una historia
muy tolerable.
Intolerable Cruelty se estrenará en
las salas de cine el 10 de octubre.
Mystic River

línea de la última película
de Clint Eastwood, Mystic River (de la Warner
Bros). Basada en la novela de Dennis Lehane,
Mystic River es un drama criminal que sigue
las vidas de Jimmy (Sean Penn), Sean (Kevin
Bacon) y Dave (Tim Robbins). Juntos los tres
se ensucian los pies cuando niños en
un barrio en las afueras de Boston, sin embargo
se apartan cuando una oscura tragedia cae
sobre ellos. Pasan los siguientes veinticinco

conectados por el terrible secreto que persisite
en el fondo de sus mentes.
El repentino y misterioso asesinato de la
hija de Jimmy reúne a los tres una
vez màs. A Sean, ahora un destacado
detective de homocidios, le es asignado el
caso, junto con su confiable compañero,
Whitey (Laurence Fishburne). Sean y Whitey
tratan de descifrar el crimen mientras se
enfrentan también al enojo por la gran
pérdida de Jimmy. La historia inmediata
del asesinato se desarrolla sobre los antecedentes
de una historia mayor, la cercana amistad
de tres hombres que pierden su inocencia demasiado
pronto.
Clint Eastwood dirige, coproduce y hasta escribe
la trama. Las audiencias del Festival de Cine
de Cannes en Francia dieron un buen recibimiento
a la película, otorgàndole una
optimista augurio para su estreno en Estados
Unidos. Si el clímax de la película
le hace justicia al suspenso creado, Eastwood
tal vez obtendrá su mayor éxito
desde la ganadora del Oscar Unforgiven.
Mystic River se estrenará en algunas
ciudades el 8 de octubre y en los salas de
cine de toda la nación el 15 de octubre.
