But a few years in Hollywood is all it took for the former Texan needed to make a name for herself, having earned critical acclaim and respect for her work on projects like L.A. Dragnet, Carlita’s Secret and Hot Tamales Live. Even at a young age, Eva stood out in a crowd. With three older sisters, all with fairer skin and lighter hair than hers, the actress insists she was the “ugly duckling” of the bunch. “They used to tease me about being adopted,” she remembers with a laugh. Clearly, Eva blossomed into a swan some time ago, as the stunning 28-year-old has won numerous beauty pageants and was voted one of People en Español’s “25 Most Beautiful People” in May 2003. Eva’s pageant career began just after high school (“Entering pageants is just what everyone did,” she says modestly), and helped pay her way through Texas A&M University, where she studied kinesiology. Still involved in the theater and pageant circuit, after graduation Eva traveled to L.A. for talent scouting event. Several agents approached her within a few days, and she was hooked. “I called home and asked my mom to send me my bags,” she recalls, “and I’ve been here ever since.” The actress is the first to admit she has been blessed with opportunity in the City of Angels, especially in the realm of daytime drama. Her first role was in The Bold and the Beautiful, followed by a recurring part on General Hospital and appearances on Beverly Hills, 90210. Later, she played Isabella on The Young and the Restless, earning herself an ALMA award. Currently she stars as Detective Gloria Duran on L.A. Dragnet, and co-hosts the syndicated weekly television series The Talent Agency. Clearly, talent is something Eva knows a great deal about, which explains her passion for Hot Tamales Live—a variety show that provides a venue for female comediennes to strut their comic stuff, in a medium traditionally dominated by males. As she states simply, “It’s for women to have a place to play.” A humor buff herself, Eva writes sketches and performs for the group, in addition to co-producing. “You have to create opportunities for yourself,” she says adamantly. “That’s why I’m going into writing, producing and directing.” As the gifted artist paves her own way, she helps widen the road for other talented performers as well.
