The film stars Academy Award-winner Halle Barry as Dr. Miranda Grey, a gifted criminal psychologist at the Woodward Penitentiary for Women, a morose institution presided over by her husband, Dr. Douglas Grey (Charles Dutton). Terror strikes when Miranda blacks out during an encounter with a mysterious teenage girl, only to revive to find her husband murdered and the police fingering her as the killer. Mortified and confused, she lands with the same inmates she once treated, locked up in a cell at Woodward. As she serves her sentence and desperately tries to prove her innocence, she finds herself increasingly haunted by visions of the same young girl, which turns her behavior erratic. Her only consolation is a strengthening bond with a fellow patient, Chloe, played to possessed perfection by Spanish sensation Penelope Cruz. Drowning in a world of ghastly voices and visions and alienated from the doctor that once adored her (played by Robert Downey Jr.), Miranda begins to understand Chloe’s pain and torment while clinging to the ever-fading hope that she will break free of the ghost’s grip and uncover the truth behind her husband’s murder. “Gothika is a popcorn movie with real substance, and I want people to come into the theater ready to be scared,” says director Mathieu Kassovitz. “We’re going to give them a really suspenseful, scary ride and not let up until it’s over.” Casa de los Babys Culture clash and motherhood drive IFC Films’ recent release, Casa De Los Babys. The latest from independent film specialist John Sayles is an absorbing tale of six American women brought together by a common goal: adopting a baby. The mothers-to-be travel to an unnamed South American country to adopt and, due to legal restrictions, are forced to take up residence for some time in a local motel, whose name inspired the title. The women come from vastly different backgrounds and have chosen to adopt for a variety of reasons—from infertility to a lack of interest in finding a father. They share their experiences and challenges with each other, while contending with the suspicious and confused locals, some of whom are the biological mothers of the babies to be adopted. The film blends touching comedy with emotional turmoil, drawing on the “fish out of water” motif as well as the more weighty issues of family and self-awareness. Expect a display of small-stage theatre that showcases the dramatic talents of its principals, rather than a noisy blockbuster or sweeping epic. These women, played by such standouts as Daryl Hannah and Mary Steenburgen, make you feel their pain and joy as they sit and wait for their wish of motherhood to come true.
