Exclusive Interview: OZOMATLI

Named for the Aztec God of dance, Ozomatli blends conscious lyrics with multi-cultural grooves, inspiring movement of body and mind alike. Latin rhythms come together with hip-hop, funk, and myriad styles. And the band members themselves form a rich cultural stew—Mexican, Cuban, African, Japanese, Jewish, Filipino—that embodies Ozomatli’s universal message. Here we have an eclectic whirlwind of big, brassy horns and rap lyrics shouting out against social injustice.
Jiro Yamaguchi, the band’s percussionist, spoke with Tinta Latina:
J.Y: “We’re often associated with Latin culture. We sing mostly in Spanish and play Latin rhythms, but the message is universal—people are people.”
T.L: What Latin musicians have been particularly influential?
J.Y: “Our next album features Eddie Palmieri…it’s a great honor to work with him. He’s an icon in the Latin music world. He’s definitely been an influence, along with artists like Los Lobos, who are mentor figures to the band.”
T.L: Ozomatli’s toured with some of the biggest names in music, including Santana and Los Lobos. You are Grammy Award winners, ALMA Award winners, Latin Billboard Award nominees, and Ritmo Latino Music Award nominees. How does it feel to be respected as a peer by someone like Carlos Santana?
J.Y: “To play with Carlos, and hear him say good things about us, is surreal. Santana goes beyond the Latin world—he is a legend in the music world. Santana transcends culture and race…to in some way be on equal footing is unreal.”
T.L: Ozomatli supports many social causes, including the Zapatista movement in Mexico. Where is your energy focused now?
J.Y: “Currently, opposing the war in Iraq is our main focus. The rights of indigenous people are important, but many Zapatistas question why Americans concern themselves with Chiapas when we have our own problems here.”
T.L: Through all the accolades, Ozomatli maintains focus on what’s really important—their feel-good music and its power as a vehicle for social justice:
J.Y: “To have access to people like you (Tinta Latina), and be able to use our music to inspire positive change, is very gratifying.”

Bautizada en honor al Dios Azteca de la Danza, Ozomatli mezcla conscientes letras con rasgos multiculturales, inspirando el movimiento del cuerpo y de la mente. Los ritmos latinos se unen al hip-hop, al funk y a muchos otros estilos. Los miembros de la banda, todos ellos de ricos y diferentes antepasados (mexicano, cubano, africano, japonés, judío y filipino), hacen de Ozomatli un mensaje universal. Aquí está un ecléctico torbellino de grandes y estridentes sonidos y letras de rap gritando contra las injusticias sociales.

J.Y: “A menudo nos asocian con la cultura latina. Cantamos principalmente en español y tocamos ritmos latinos, pero el mensaje es universal, la gente es gente”

J.Y: “Tocar con Carlos y oírlo decir buenas cosas sobre nosotros es surrealista, Santana va más allá del mundo latino, es una leyenda en la música mundial. Santana trasciende toda cultura y raza… por lo que situarse en la misma condición es irreal”.
T.L: Ozomatli apoya muchas causas sociales, incluyendo el movimiento Zapatista en México. ¿En qué está concentrada su energía actualmente?
J.Y: “Actualmente, nuestro enfoque principal es en contra de la guerra en Irak. Los derechos de los indígenas son importantes, pero muchos zapatistas se preguntan por qué los estadounidenses se preocupan por Chiapas cuando aquí tenemos nuestros propios problemas”.
T.L: Entre todas las causas, Ozomatli se mantiene enfocado en lo que es realmente importante, su música de buen sentir y su poder como vehículo para la justicia social:
J.Y: “Tener acceso a gente como ustedes (Tinta Latina) y ser capaces de usar nuestra música para inspirar un cambio positivo es muy gratificante”.
