The Passion of the Christ

As I write this, The Passion of the Christ is setting box office records and causing more controversy than any movie in recent history. Why? To answer this question, I lined up with many others on a rainy Wednesday afternoon.
A word of warning. The film is extremely violent and brutal, and though I think any adult should be able to handle it, I do not think it is suitable for young children. Aside from that, I found the Passion to be biblically accurate, but just to be sure, I read through the New Testament immediately after viewing the film.
The gripe from many Jewish leaders around the country, and notable columnists such as William Safire of the New York Times, is that the film blames Jews for the death of Jesus , and could cause anti-Semitism. If this is true, then the same can be said of the New Testament. In all four gospels, it is written that the Pharisees wanted Jesus killed, but by their own laws they could not put a man to death, so they went to the Romans, Pontius Pilate specifically. Jewish leaders have also complained that the film does not show what a murderous thug Pilate really was, so it is not historically accurate. But the New Testament plainly states over and over that Pilate did not want to kill Jesus, even when the Pharisees repeatedly called for his crucifixion. Therefore, if one is to say the movie is historically inaccurate, they are essentially saying the same about the New Testament. In my opinion, the film, and the New Testament blame not all Jews, but he Pharisees, who saw Christ as a threat.
Mel Gibson has said that he has never come under such intense personal attack as when making this movie, and that the film was unfairly prejudged for a year before it was even released. That publicity has not hurt the film, as it has become the highest grossing movie ever to open on a Wednesday. But that is beside the point. What is important is that people go and see this powerful movie without preconceived notions, and decide for themselves what is true.

Conforme escribo esto, La Pasión de Cristo está marcando record en las taquillas y causando más controversia que cualquier película en la historia reciente. ¿Por qué? Para contestar esta pregunta, me reuní con muchos otros en una lluviosa tarde de miércoles.
Una advertencia. La película es extremadamente violenta y brutal, y aunque pienso que cualquier adulto debe de poder tolerarla, no creo que sea apta para niños. A parte de eso, encuentro la Pasión bíblicamente acertada, pero sólo para estar seguro, leí el Nuevo Testamento inmediatamente después de ver la película.
La queja de muchos líderes Judíos alrededor del país y de notables columnistas como William Safire del New York Times, es que el filme culpa a los judíos por la muerte de Jesús y por lo tanto podría causar antisemitismo. De ser así, entonces se puede decir lo mismo del Nuevo Testamento. En los cuatro evangelios, está escrito que los fariseos querían a Jesús muerto, pero en sus propias leyes no podían llevar a un hombre a la muerte, por lo que acudieron a los romanos, específicamente a Poncio Pilates. Los líderes judíos también se ha quejado de que la película no muestra lo asesino y criminal de Pilates, por lo que no es históricamente acertada. Sin embargo, el Nuevo Testamento afirma una y otra vez que Pilates no quería matar a Jesús, aun cuando los fariseos pedían repetidamente su crucifixión. Por lo tanto, si alguien dice que la película es históricamente incorrecta, entonces está esencialmente diciendo lo mismo sobre el Nuevo Testamento. En mi opinión, tanto la película como el Nuevo Testamento no culpan a los judíos, sino a los fariseos, quienes veían a Jesús como una amenaza.
Mel Gibson ha dicho que nunca se había enfrentado a tan intenso ataque personal como cuando se hizo esta película y que la misma ha sido prejuzgada desde una año antes de su estreno. La publicidad no ha dañado a la película, pues ha sido la película de mayor ganancia al estrenarse en un miércoles. Pero eso es otra cosa. Lo que es importante es que la gente va a ver esta poderosa película sin ideas preconcebidas y decide por sí misma lo que es o no verdad.
