The suave Mexican appears totally comfortable with his celebrity. And that’s good, because Diego is once again heating up the screen in Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, the Cuban cousin of the Patrick Swayze dance classic. Though this sexy, young man did not sweep me into his arms and teach me to tango, he did answer my questions with candor and enthusiasm. Q: Are there big cultural adjustments for a Mexican playing a Cuban? A: “Mexicans, we’re not really good dancers. We’re really good at drinking and singing, but we’re not the best dancers.” Q: So if you aren’t a particularly good dancer, how hard was it for you to learn the moves? A: “The first two weeks were a nightmare. You have a huge mirror in front of you, and you never look as good as the teacher. I was really close to quitting. But after that it was nice. It’s such a pleasure to know how to move your body. In a way you have to be proud of your body to make moves and make it look beautiful. It should be a way to fix couples. When you have a problem with your girlfriend or your wife, you should go to a dance lesson and that will help communicate what you feel.” Q: What do you think of your sex symbol status? A: “If you open a magazine, you see really cute guys. I see myself, and I don’t look that good. I don’t think that way, because then I would become a horrible person. If you know you’re a sex symbol, life gets boring. You know you can get anything you want. In fact, it’s not true. Whenever I go to a club, it takes me a while to get close to a girl and start to talk. El amable mexicano parece sentirse cómodo siendo una celebridad. Eso es bueno, pues Diego otra vez está haciendo vibrar la pantalla con Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, el primo cubano del baile clásico de Patrick Swayze. A pesar de que este joven y sexy hombre no me tomó en sus brazos ni me enseñó a bailar tango, sí contestó mis preguntas con candor y entusiasmo. P: ¿Hay grandes ajustes para un mexicano al jugar el papel de cubano? R: “Los mexicanos no somos buenos bailarines. Somos buenos bebiendo y cantando, pero no somos los mejores bailarines”. P: Así que, si no eres particularmente buen bailarín, ¿fue difícil aprender los movimientos? R: “Las primeras dos semanas fueron una pesadilla. Tienes un gran espejo enfrente tuyo y nunca te ves tan bien como el maestro. Estuve a punto de renunciar, pero después estuvo bien. Es un gran placer saber como mover tu cuerpo. De alguna manera tienes que estar orgulloso de tu cuerpo para moverlo y hacerlo ver hermoso. Debería de ser una manera de arreglar los problemas de pareja. Si tienes un problema con tu novia o tu esposa, deberías ir a una lección de baile y eso te ayudaría a comunicar tus sentimientos”. P: ¿Qué opinas de tu imagen de símbolo sexual? R: “Si abres una revista, de verdad ves hombres guapos. Me veo a mí mismo y no soy tan guapo. No pienso en eso, de lo contrario me convertiría en una persona horrible. Si sabes que eres un símbolo sexual la vida se vuelve aburrida. Sabes que puedes conseguir lo que quieras y de hecho eso no es verdad. Cuando voy a un centro nocturno, me cuesta trabajo acercarme a una chica y hablarle. Las películas son fáciles, le pagan a la chica para que le gustes”. ©Pentacom Productions, 2004
