Noticias, Educacion, Arte, Horoscopos, y Mucho Mas...   The Santa Barbara Latino CineMedia Festival By Matt Katz UC Santa Barbara and community organizations proudly introduce the Inaugural Santa Barbara Latino CineMedia Festival, a celebration of the creativity and vision of Latin American, U.S. Latino, and Native American filmmakers. The five-day event runs from April 14 through April 18, 2004. Joining Tinta Latina is Cristina Venegas, the festival’s Artistic Director: Q. Santa Barbara recently hosted the National Association of Latino Independent Producers conference. And just this week, the National Association of Latino Publishers held a similar conference in Los Angeles. Is the Latino CineMedia Festival part of a larger movement? A.“At this point, it’s really just community and university. We got our first grant from the SB County Arts Commission, and between that and the university, particularly UCSB Department of Film Studies and Arts & Lectures, we’ve pulled this whole thing together.” Q. The SB Film Festival grows annually, drawing the interest of people well beyond our city limits. Are there hopes to bring this festival to a similar level, into the mainstream? A. “Yes and no; we want to keep a connection to the university, and also maintain that link with the high schools and students who are producing work to show in the festival…having a strong educational component is a large part of our focus. There’s less emphasis on celebrity, instead we’re celebrating the community we’re serving.” Q. I notice that an American theme runs through your program — Native American and Latin American filmmakers — yet, nothing from Spain. Was that intentional? A. “Yes. It’s not to exclude anyone, but we have space to really just to focus on the Americas…We have so many distinct Latino countries and cultures, and those cultures are represented in the United States as well…You have diversity and different histories of immigration, and with the programming this year I’ve tried to hit different areas of interest. Q. What are your hopes for the future of this festival? A. We’re working to create a festival that comes out of the community. Santa Bárbara recientemente fue anfitrión de la conferencia de la Asociación Nacional de Productores Latinos Independientes y, justo esta semana, la Asociación Nacional de Publicistas Latinos celebrará una conferencia similar en Los Ángeles. ¿Es el Festival Latino CineMedia parte de un movimiento mayor? R.“En este momento es sólo la comunidad y la universidad. Obtuvimos nuestro primer gran financiamiento de la Comisión de Artes del Condado de Santa Bárbara y, entre eso y la universidad, en particular el Departamento de Estudios Cinematográficos y Arts & Lectures de UCSB, hemos armado todo esto”. P. El Festival de Cine de Santa Bárbara crece cada año, llamando la atención de la gente fuera de los límites de nuestra ciudad. ¿Existen esperanzas de llevar este festival al mismo nivel, dentro de la principal corriente? R. “Sí y no, queremos mantener la conexión con la universidad y también mantener el vínculo con las preparatorias y los estudiantes que están produciendo trabajo para mostrar en el festival… tener un fuerte componente educativo es una gran parte de nuestro enfoque. Hay menos énfasis en la celebridad, en lugar de eso estamos celebrando a la comunidad a la que servimos”. P. He notado que un tema americano destaca en tu programa, los productores de cine nativo americanos y latinoamericanos, sin embargo nada de España. ¿Esto fue a propósito? R. “Sí. No se trata de excluir a nadie, pero sólo tenemos espacio para enfocarnos en las Américas… Tenemos tantos diferentes países y culturas latinas, y esas culturas son representadas también en Estados Unidos… Se tiene diversidad y diferentes historias de migración. Con el programa de este año he tratado de tocar diferentes áreas de interés. P. ¿Qué esperas del festival en un futuro? R. Estamos trabajando para crear un festival que salga de nuestra comunidad. Es difícil, pero esperamos tener suficiente éxito para hacerlo otra vez el próximo año.
