From Miss Teenager of the World 1971 to Superstardom, Maria Conchita Alonso is Better Than Ever in 2004

Since her early days in beauty pageants, three decades ago, Maria Conchita Alonso’s charisma and strength of character have helped define the accomplished Latina. Now approaching 50, and more beautiful than ever, the legendary performer opens up about her life, her music, and plans for a new Latina television series.
What projects are you currently working on?
“I’m co-writing a TV series about Latinas for the North American market. And I’ve been working on my new music for a while now. The EP is coming out in October and I’m performing three of the songs at the Latin Pride parade on the 5th of September.”
How would you describe the style of music?
“The EP has 8 remixes of Soy, the main song, so I have 8 different versions of the same song: house, dance, electro, techno…but that’s just the EP. The CD, which is coming out next year, is completely different. The CD is Latin pop. It has Spanish guitars, hip-hop, trip-hop, a few ballads…very different than this EP…I tried to do the CD in a very modern way, but in a way that doesn’t hurt people’s ears. I want to keep the audience that I have and [attract] a new audience. So although it’s very hip and modern, I tried to control it and not be too out there.”
Musical genre isn’t easily defined these days. Do you ever find it difficult to stay hip to the modern sounds?
“I don’t want to record the same kind of music that I did before. Believe it or not, with my musical background (Maria has 11 albums to her credit, 5 of which went gold; 17 of her previously released singles were chart toppers) I still don’t have a label for the CD. I do for the EP, Cleopatra – a very successful sort of Gothic underground label that specializes in mixes, but not with the CD. I want to do new things, and the labels did not want to take a risk. So I did it on my own. I’m the Executive Producer and recorded all the songs. Now what’s important is to make the EP a hit so that next year we can launch the CD the way it should be launched.”
What has led to your involvement with the Latin Pride Festival?
“The Latino gay community has always been very supportive of me, maybe because I’m a very strong person and have always respected everyone’s point of view and way of life.”
You’ve been called a ‘world citizen.’ You were born in Cuba, raised in Venezuela, schooled in Switzerland and Paris, and live in the U.S. Do you consider yourself an American?
"
I am an American. Latin Americans are American people, too…I went to Washington state to learn English when I was 13…I moved to Los Angeles 20 years ago, just grabbed my bags, my animals, my money, and started meeting people and auditioning.”
Sounds like the classic American success story: from Miss Teenager of the World 1971 to Miss Venezuela 1975 to Hollywood fame and fortune. Now that you’ve arrived, what’s your greatest extravagance?
“I love plastic! Not just supermarket plastic, no. I love little cosmetic bags with zippers and…oh, I have no idea, but I just love it! I see it and I touch and…I know that’s very weird.”
It’s a little strange, but to each their own. And what about your famously adored pets?
“They are my kids. I have one dog and two cats (Maria works with many animal protection groups)…I’m not married. I do have a boyfriend, and would like this to be ‘The One.’ Relationships are hard work.”
Your career includes humanitarian work and many international awards as a model, singer, actress, and philanthropist. What are your future plans?
“It would be great to have the TV series that I co-wrote…It’s a series for the American market, for the Anglo world. It’s in English, with Latina actresses. I want it for cable rather than the big networks…Right now I’m really concentrating on music…the EP is mainly for young people – You can be 50 and young.”
How would you like to be remembered?
“Someone who lived her life by her own standards, the way she wanted to live.”

Desde sus días en los desfiles de moda hace tres décadas, el carisma y el fuerte carácter de María Conchita Alonso, han ayudado a definir de esta exitosa latina. Ahora, cerca de los 50 y más guapa que nunca, la legendaria actriz se abre con respecto a su vida, su música y sus planes para una nueva serie de televisión.
¿En qué proyectos estás trabajando actualmente?
“Estoy co escribiendo una serie de televisión sobre latinas para el mercado de Norte América y he estado trabajando durante un tiempo ya en mi nueva música. El EP se lanzará en octubre y presentaré tres de las canciones en el Desfile del Orgullo Latino el 5 de septiembre”.
¿Cómo describirías el estilo de la música?
“El EP tiene 8 mezclas de Soy, la canción principal, por lo que tengo 8 versiones de la misma canción: house, para bailar, electro, tecno… pero eso es sólo el EP. El CD, que se lanzará el próximo año, es completamente diferente. EL CD es pop latino, tiene guitarra española, hip-hop, trip-hop y algunas baladas… muy diferente que este EP. Traté de hacer el CD de forma muy moderna, pero de tal manera que no lastime el oído de la gente. Quiero mantener a la audiencia que tengo y (atraer) a una nueva audiencia, por lo que a pesar de ser muy a la moda y moderno, traté de controlarlo y no caer en exceso”.
Actualmente el género musical no es fácil de definir. ¿Alguna vez te ha sido difícil mantenerte a la moda con los sonidos modernos?
“No quiero grabar el mismo tipo de música que toqué anteriormente. Lo creas o no, con todo y mi antecedente musical (María tiene 11 álbumes, 5 de éstos dorados y 17 de sus sencillos anteriores han estado en las primeras posiciones de popularidad) aun no tengo casa discográfica para el CD. Tengo para el ED, Cleopatra, una exitosa casa discográfica tipo clandestino gótico que se especializa en mezclas, pero no tengo nada para el CD. Quiero hacer cosas nuevas, pero las casas discográficas no quieren correr riesgos, por eso lo hice por mi cuenta. Soy el Productor Ejecutivo y grabé todas las canciones. Ahora lo importante es salir exitosos con el EP para que el próximo año podamos lanzar el CD como debe de ser”.
¿Qué te llevó a involucrarte con el Festival del Orgullo Latino?
“La comunidad gay latina siempre me ha apoyado, quizá porque soy una persona fuerte y siempre he respetado el punto de vista de cada persona”.
Te han nombrado “ciudadano del mundo”. Naciste en Cuba, te educaste en Venezuela, fuiste a la escuela en Suiza y Paris y vives en Estados Unidos. ¿Te consideras americana?
“Yo soy americana. Los latinoamericanos somos gente americana también… fui al estado de Washington a aprender inglés cuando tenía 13 años… me mudé a Los Ángeles hace 20 años, agarré mis maletas, mis animales, mi dinero y empecé a conocer gente y a hacer audiciones”.
Suena como la clásica historia de éxito estadounidense: de Miss Adolescente del mundo en 1971 a Miss Venezuela en 1975 a la fama y fortuna de Hollywood. Ahora que has llegado hasta este punto, ¿cuál es tu mayor extravagancia?
“¡Me encanta el plástico!, No sólo el plástico del supermercado, no. Me encantan las bolsitas de cosméticos con cierre y… no lo sé, ¡simplemente me encanta! Lo veo y lo toco y… yo sé que es muy extraño”.
Es un poco extraño, pero cada quien lo suyo. Y ¿qué me dices de tus famosas y adoradas mascotas?
“Son mis hijos. Tengo un perro y dos gatos (María trabaja con varios grupos de protección animal)… no soy casada, tengo novio, y me gustaría que éste fuera el definitivo. Las relaciones requieren mucho trabajo”.
Tu carrera incluye trabajo humanitario y muchos premios internacionales como modelo, cantante, actriz y filántropa. ¿Cuáles son tus próximos planes?
“Sería maravilloso tener la serie de televisión que co escribí… Es una serie para el mercado estadounidense, para el mundo anglo parlante . Es en inglés con actrices latinas. Quiero que salga en cable en lugar de las grandes cadenas… En este momento estoy concentrada en la música… el EP es principalmente para jóvenes. Puedes tener 50 años y ser joven”.
¿Cómo te gustaría que te recordaran?
“Como alguien que vivió su vida conforme a sus propios estándares, de la manera en que quiso vivir”.
