Exclusive Interview: Laura Harring
A REAL LIFE CINDERELLA

Dorothy may have worn the famous ruby slippers while walking the yellow brick road to Oz, but it was Laura Harring who wore million dollar diamond sandals to walk the red carpet at the 2002 Academy Awards.
Harring, the first ever Latina Miss USA, wasn’t an Oscar contender that year, but she won critical acclaim for her performance in David Lynch's film Mulholland Drive. Currently, she’s onscreen as John Travolta’s wife in The Punisher.
So, are million dollar shoes actually comfortable?
“They were the most comfortable shoes! I was in them for more than twelve hours. The first time I tried them on they fit perfectly. I felt like Cinderella. It was that kind of feeling.”
Winning Miss USA must have been another fairytale moment in your life. How did that feel?
“They told me that I couldn’t win because I was Latina. People just tried to make it easy on me by saying, “Well, if you don’t win, don’t take it personally. There’s never been a Latina to represent the United States.” That just fueled my fire.
Do you find Hollywood more open-minded?
“I’ve been in Hollywood a long time. For some reason it hasn’t been an easy ride for me. I think partly because people couldn’t place me. I don’t look so exotic that I look completely Latina. They said I was too fair to be Mexican, yet I have a little accent so I’m not completely American. It took someone like David Lynch, who loved the fact that you couldn’t tell where the heck I was from.”
The first ten years of your life were spent in Mexico. What do you do that reminds you of your Mexican heritage?
“I dance Salsa, Meringue, Cha-Cha, Mambo, Tango. My specialty is Tango. I got to dance with John {Travolta} off camera one time. He took me in his arms and he did a little spin and dip. It was the highlight of my shooting experience.

UNA VIDA DE CENICIENTA

Dorotea tal vez usó las famosas zapatillas de rubí cuando recorría el camino amarillo hacia Oz, pero fue Laura Harring quien llevó unas sandalias de diamante de un millón de dólares al recorrer la alfombra roja en los Premios de la Academia 2002.
Harring, la primer Miss USA latina, no competía por el Oscar ese año, sin embargo ganó ovaciones en las críticas por su actuación en la película de David Lynch, Mulholland Drive. Actualmente se le ve en pantalla como la esposa de John Travolta en The Punisher.
Así que, ¿son cómodos los zapatos de un millón de dólares?
“¡Son los zapatos más cómodos! Los tuve puestos por más de doce horas. La primera vez que me los probé me quedaron perfectos. Me sentí como cenicienta, fue ese tipo de sentimiento”.
Ganar Miss USA debe de haber sido otro momento de ensueño en tu vida. ¿Cómo te sentiste?
“Me dijeron que no podía ganar por ser latina. La gente trataba de ser amable diciéndome “No lo tomes personal si no ganas, nunca ha habido una latina representando a Estados Unidos”. Eso me dio aun más energía”.
¿Sientes que Hollywood es más abierto?
“He estado en Hollywood durante mucho tiempo. Por alguna razón ha sido un camino fácil para mí. Yo creo que en parte es porque la gente no puede ubicarme. No soy tan exótica como para ser una latina completa. Decían que era muy clara para ser mexicana, y como tengo un ligero acento tampoco soy completamente estadounidense. Tuvo que ser alguien como David Lynch, a quien le encantó el hecho de no poder decir fácilmente de donde soy”.
Pasaste los primeros diez años de tu vida en México. ¿ Qué haces que te recuerde tu herencia mexicana?
“Bailo Salsa, Merengue, Cha cha chá, Mambo, Tango. Mi especialidad es el tango. Pude bailar con John (Travolta) fuera de escena una vez. Me tomó en sus brazos y dio una voltereta. Fue el mejor momento de mi experiencia en la filmación.
