This fearless Venezuelan is the fastest Latina on four wheels. And with four masters degrees to match, she's not just faster than you... she's smarter, too!
Milka Duno has a need for speed. She gets her regular fix behind the wheel of a Pontiac Crawford Daytona Prototype, driving up to 200 miles per
hour in heavy traffic. It’s legal though, because Duno is a top class Le Mans driver, competing with other pro drivers on twisting tracks in the U.S.
and abroad. And she’s doing very well.
Duno is the only Latina who races professionally, and the first woman in history to win a major sports car race in North America. In February, Milka and co-driver Andy Wallace took first place in the Grand Prix of Miami.
“It’s amazing to me because I have only been driving professionally for five years,” says Duno. She began club racing in her native Venezuela in 1997, after she and some friends were invited to a driving seminar. “I got hooked immediately!”
Though she makes it seem effortless, driving those rockets on wheels is demanding, requiring expert timing, mechanical knowledge, and stamina, because Le Mans races can last as long as 24 hours. The cars are considered by many to be the breeding ground for automotive innovations. “You have to be in very good condition, and your mind has to be fresh,” Duno tells me.
Winning is extra difficult and dangerous because each Le Mans race has four classes of cars running at once, driving at different speeds. Drivers compete to be best in class as well as overall winner.
“Winning is very satisfying because it is so difficult to do,” says Duno.
The sport also requires a keen mind. Duno has four engineering degrees, three of which she earned simultaneously. In her “spare” time, the young student worked as a model. “I had to eat,” she says almost apologetically, as though embarrassed about earning
money from her looks.
She credits her engineering knowledge with helping her be a better driver. “It is very technical, with computers and telemetry.”
In August, the Duno-Wallace team took second place at the Mid-Ohio Road Racing Classic at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio. The pair was honored on the podium for the second time in only seven races so far this season.
While gratifying, it wasn’t enough for this fierce competitor. “This is what I have been determined to do, and I want to be one of the best.”
So why has she chosen such a difficult road? “It is very competitive and challenging. I like difficult things,” she says. “You need to improve all the time.”
And there is a little something else that motivates her. “When I am driving, I like the adrenaline. You feel like you want more and more and more, you want to go faster and faster. It’s like an addiction,” she admits.
Duno’s successes have been recognized not only by her peers and fans, but more importantly, by the sponsors. Just as the cars run on highoctane fuel, the sport of racing runs on supercharged checkbooks. Without money, the whole process would sputter to a stop.
Milka’s skill and attitude have won her high-profile sponsors, something extremely difficult to do, even for the men.
Her primary sponsor is CITGO, which has gas stations primarily east of the Rockies. And she has an endorsement contract with Pontiac. Duno is promoting the new G6, which the carmaker calls its “most significant new car launch to date.” She will appear in Pontiac’s largest ever Latino marketing campaign—in Spanish—that will integrate broadcast, print, and web advertising.
Though modeling and acting are distant possibilities, Duno remains focused on racing. “This is what I do,” she says. “I am creating my future now.”
Despite her accomplishments and growing fame, Milka Duno is a good-natured, soft-spoken woman who has a great deal of humility.
Just don’t get in her way on the track!

Esta venezolana sin miedo es la latina más rápida en cuatro ruedas. Y con cuatro títulos de maestría, ella no es sólo más rápida que ustedes… ¡ella es también más inteligente!
Milka Duno tiene una necesidad por la velocidad. Ella obtiene su dosis regular detrás del volante del Pontiac Crawford Daytona Prototype, conduciendo a 200 millas por hora en un tráfico pesado. Es legal, porque Duno es la conductora número uno de la clase Le Mans, compitiendo con otros pilotos profesionales en las pistas peligrosas de Estados Unidos y del resto del mundo. Y a ella le está yendo muy bien.
Duno es la única latina que corre profesionalmente, y la primera mujer en la historia en ganar una carrera deportiva en Norte América. En febrero, Milka y su copiloto, Andy Wallace, obtuvieron el primer puesto en la carrera Grand Prix de Miami.
“Es increíble para mí porque sólo he estado corriendo profesionalmente durante cinco años” dice Duno. Ella comenzó la carrera en su nativa Venezuela en 1997, después de haber sido invitada junto a unos amigos a un seminario de conducción de automóviles. “¡Inmediatamente en enganché!”.
Aunque ella intenta hacerlo ver sin esfuerzos, el conducir esos misiles con ruedas es demandante, requiere tiempo de experiencia, conocimiento mecánico, y resistencia, porque las carreras Le Mans pueden llegar a durar 24 horas. Estos automóviles son considerados por muchos como el caldo de cultivo para las innovaciones automovilísticas.
“Uno tiene que estar en muy buenas condiciones y tener la mente fresca”, dice Duno. Ganar es más difícil y peligroso porque cada carrera Le Mans tiene cuatro clases de vehículos corriendo al mismo tiempo, siendo conducidos a diferentes velocidades. Los pilotos compiten por ser el mejor en la clase como también ganador de la carrera en general.
“El ganar es muy satisfactorio porque es muy difícil hacerlo”, dice Duno.
El deporte también requiere una mente aguda. Duno tiene cuatro títulos en ingeniería, tres de los cuales obtuvo simultáneamente. En su tiempo “libre”, la joven estudiante trabajaba como modelo. “Yo tenía que comer”, ella dice con aire de disculpa, como avergonzada por ganar dinero a costa de su figura.
Ella le da crédito a su conocimiento en ingeniería por ayudarla a ser una mejor piloto. “Es muy técnico, con computadoras y telemetría”.
En agosto, el equipo Duno-Wallace obtuvo la segunda posición en la Carrera Clásica de Mid-Ohio Road en la pista de Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course en Lexington, Ohio. La pareja fue honorada en el podium del segundo lugar solamente en siete carreras esta temporada.
Aunque gratificante, no fue suficiente para esta competidora feroz. “Esto es lo que me he determinado hacer, y quiero ser una de las mejores”.
Entonces, ¿por qué ha elegido esta ruta difícil? “Es muy competitivo y desafiante. Me gustan las cosas difíciles”, ella dice. “Uno necesita mejorarse todo el tiempo”.
Y hay algo pequeño que también la motiva a ella. “Cuando estoy conduciendo, me gusta la adrenalina. Uno siente que quiere más y más y más, quieres ir más rápido y más rápido. Es como una adicción”, ella admite.
El éxito de Duno ha sido reconocido no solamente por sus colegas y admiradores, pero más importantemente, por sus patrocinadores. Como los autos que funcionan a gasolina de alto octanaje, el deporte de carreras automovilísticas funciona a chequeras bien cargadas. Sin dinero, todo el proceso podría comenzar a fallar hasta detenerse.
La aptitud y actitud de Milka le han hecho ganar patrocinantes de alto perfil, algo extremadamente difícil de conseguir, incluso para los hombres.
Su patrocinante primordial es CITGO, quien tiene estaciones gasolineras en el este de las Rockies. Y ella tiene un contrato de endorso con Pontiac. Duno está promocionando el Nuevo G6, el cual es llamado por la industria automotriz “el nuevo más importante automóvil lanzado hasta la fecha”. Ella aparecerá en la campaña de mercado más grande de Pontiac –en español- que integrará medios difusión, prensa y propaganda en internet.
Aunque el modelaje y la actuación son posibilidades distantes, Duno se mantiene enfocada en la carrera de autos. “Esto es lo que quiero hacer”, ella dice. “Yo estoy construyendo mi futuro ahora”.
A pesar de sus logros y su creciente fama, Milka Duno es una mujer de buena naturaleza, dulce, que le da mucha importancia a la humildad. Solamente no se crucen en su camino en la pista.
