SETTLING DOWN WITH JENNIFER LOPEZ
The Puerto Rican-American superstar is moving on to a new phase of life, leaving J Lo behind and waxing philosophical on the value of “true joy” over public recognition.
Lounging on a velvet chair, Jennifer, as she likes to be called these days, is wearing a natural-colored dress made of gentle fabric that graces her famous curves.
Q: Einstein said, “Life without music is a mistake.” Can we apply this quote to dance?
Jennifer Lopez: Yes. I think that music and dance go hand in hand. You need both. If there is music in your life, then there is dancing. And when there is dancing, there is happiness and joy!
Q: What’s your favorite dance?
J.L: My favorite dance is Salsa, for sure! It always has been and will always be. But I like any type of dance, and have danced since I was 5 years old.
Q: Do you like to lead or be led?
J.L: (laughs) Well, it depends on my mood, but I like to be led if the man I’m dancing with knows what he is doing!
Q: Was it challenging for you to get back into dancing when you made your last film, Shall We Dance?
J.L: Well, actually it was a bit tricky for me because Ballroom dancing is very hard and I’m not used to it. It’s different than any others I have done. It’s very technical, and you have to learn a lot of elaborate moves. So it was a nice challenge for me, and fun.
Q: Do you think life has become too competitive, that there is too much pressure put on us, even by ourselves?
J.L: Absolutely. But I think that what my character [in Shall We Dance] realizes is life shouldn’t be about the competition, but about the dancing. It shouldn’t be about the pressure and competition we have with our lives, but about life. Sometimes we forget how to just be, and let life be. What we have to do in our lives is concentrate on what it is we’re doing, and the pure joy of that. That’s why you do it, for the joy, the pleasure. Whatever awards should be icing on the cake, not why you’re doing it.
Q: Susan Sarandon’s character talks about how, when we are married, we are “each others’ witnesses in life. What do you think of that?
J.L: I loved that image, and I do agree. I really thought it was a beautiful piece of writing. And it’s true, you have a partner because you love them and want them to be there. Especially when you get older, and it’s not about hot passion anymore, they become a witness to your life, and you a witness of theirs. You have beautiful memories and can look back together and cherish that past, that life together. It’s a beautiful thing to be able to build something with somebody. And it’s a good reason to stick with each other – for that moment late in your lives.
Q: So does this mean you’re ready for family?
J.L: Of course! You know, this is the next step in my life now that I’m settled down.

Q: Einstein dijo, “La vida sin música es un error”. ¿Podemos aplicar esta cita al baile?
Jennifer Lopez: Sí. Yo creo que la música y el baile van de la mano, Uno necesita a ambos. Si hay música en tu vida, entonces hay baile. ¡Y donde hay baile, hay alegría y placer!
Q: ¿Cuál es tu baile favorito?
J.L: ¡Mi favorito es la Salsa, segura! Siempre lo ha sido y siempre lo será. Pero me gusta todo tipo de baile, y he bailado desde que tengo 5 años.
Q: ¿Te gusta que te lleven o te gusta llevar?
J.L: (risas) Bueno, depende de mi ánimo, ¡pero me gusta que me lleven si el hombre con el que estoy bailando sabe lo que está haciendo!
Q: ¿Fue difícil volver a la danza cuando realizaste tu última película, Shall be Dance?
J.L: Bueno, en realidad fue un poco complicado para mí porque el baile de salón es muy difícil y no estoy tan acostumbrada a él. Es diferente a todos los otros que he hecho. Es muy técnico, y uno tiene que aprender muchos movimientos elaborados. Por eso fue un buen desafío para mí, y divertido.
Q: ¿Piensas que la vida se ha convertido en demasiado competitiva, que hay demasiada presión puesta sobre nosotros, inclusive por nosotros mismos?
J.L: Absolutamente. Pero pienso que mi personaje [en Shall We Dance] se da cuenta que la vida no debería ser una competencia, sino un baile. No debería tratarse de la presión y la competencia que tenemos en nuestras visas, pero más sobre la vida. A veces nos olvidamos cómo solamente ser, y dejar que la vida sea. Lo que tenemos que hacer en nuestras vidas es concentrarnos en lo que estamos haciendo, y en el puro placer de ello. Esa es la razón por la cual lo hacemos, por el placer. Todos los premios deberían ser como la guinda que corona la torta, no la razón para hacerlo.
Q: El personaje de Susan Sarandon habla sobre cómo, cuando nos casamos, somos los testigos de “uno de los otros” en la vida. ¿Qué piensas sobre esto?
J.L: Me encantaba esa imagen, y estoy de acuerdo. Realmente creo que es una hermosa pieza de escritura. Y es verdad, uno tiene un compañero porque los amas y quieres que esté ahí. Especialmente cuando uno envejece, y no se trata más de la pasión incontrolable, se convierten en testigos de tu vida, y una en testigo de sus vidas. Uno tiene memorias preciosas y puedes mirar hacia atrás juntos y festejar el pasado, la vida juntos. Es algo hermoso el poder crear algo con alguien. Y es una buena razón para quedarse con la otra persona- para ese momento en la vida más tarde.
Q: ¿Entonces esto significa que estás lista para una familia?
J.L: ¡Por supuesto! Tú sabes, este es el próximo paso en mi vida ahora que me he establecido.
